  1. بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ ﴿1﴾

    'Abasa wa tawallaa.

    He frowned and turned away

  2. أَن جَآءَهُ ٱلْأَعْمَىٰ ﴿2﴾

    An jaa-ahul 'a-maa

    Because the blind man came unto him.

  3. وَمَا يُدْرِيكَ لَعَلَّهُۥ يَزَّكَّىٰٓ ﴿3﴾

    Wa maa yudreeka la'allahu yaz zakkaa.

    What could inform thee but that he might grow (in grace)

  4. أَوْ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنفَعَهُ ٱلذِّكْرَىٰٓ ﴿4﴾

    Au yaz zak karu fatanfa 'ahuz zikraa.

    Or take heed and so the reminder might avail him?

  5. أَمَّا مَنِ ٱسْتَغْنَىٰ ﴿5﴾

    Amma manis taghnaa

    As for him who thinketh himself independent,

  6. فَأَنتَ لَهُۥ تَصَدَّىٰ ﴿6﴾

    Fa-anta lahu tasaddaa

    Unto him thou payest regard.

  7. وَمَا عَلَيْكَ أَلَّا يَزَّكَّىٰ ﴿7﴾

    Wa ma 'alaika allaa yaz zakka.

    Yet it is not thy concern if he grow not (in grace).

  8. وَأَمَّا مَن جَآءَكَ يَسْعَىٰ ﴿8﴾

    Wa amma man jaa-aka yas'a

    But as for him who cometh unto thee with earnest purpose

  9. وَهُوَ يَخْشَىٰ ﴿9﴾

    Wahuwa yakhshaa,

    And hath fear,

  10. فَأَنتَ عَنْهُ تَلَهَّىٰ ﴿10﴾

    Fa-anta 'anhu talah haa.

    From him thou art distracted.

  11. كَلَّآ إِنَّهَا تَذْكِرَةٌۭ ﴿11﴾

    Kalla innaha tazkirah

    Nay, but verily it is an Admonishment,

  12. فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ ﴿12﴾

    Faman shaa a zakarah

    So let whosoever will pay heed to it,

  13. فِى صُحُفٍۢ مُّكَرَّمَةٍۢ ﴿13﴾

    Fi suhufim mukar rama,

    On honoured leaves

  14. مَّرْفُوعَةٍۢ مُّطَهَّرَةٍۭ ﴿14﴾

    Marfoo'atim mutah hara,

    Exalted, purified,

  15. بِأَيْدِى سَفَرَةٍۢ ﴿15﴾

    Bi'aidee safara

    (Set down) by scribes

  16. كِرَامٍۭ بَرَرَةٍۢ ﴿16﴾

    Kiraamim bararah.

    Noble and righteous.

  17. قُتِلَ ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ مَآ أَكْفَرَهُۥ ﴿17﴾

    Qutilal-insanu maa akfarah.

    Man is (self-)destroyed: how ungrateful!

  18. مِنْ أَىِّ شَىْءٍ خَلَقَهُۥ ﴿18﴾

    Min aiyyi shai-in Khalaq

    From what thing doth He create him?

  19. مِن نُّطْفَةٍ خَلَقَهُۥ فَقَدَّرَهُۥ ﴿19﴾

    Min nutfah; khalaqahu faqad-darah.

    From a drop of seed. He createth him and proportioneth him,

  20. ثُمَّ ٱلسَّبِيلَ يَسَّرَهُۥ ﴿20﴾

    Thummas sabeela yas-sarah

    Then maketh the way easy for him,

  21. ثُمَّ أَمَاتَهُۥ فَأَقْبَرَهُۥ ﴿21﴾

    Thumma amatahu fa-aqbarah

    Then causeth him to die, and burieth him;

  22. ثُمَّ إِذَا شَآءَ أَنشَرَهُۥ ﴿22﴾

    Thumma iza shaa-a ansharah

    Then, when He will, He bringeth him again to life.

  23. كَلَّا لَمَّا يَقْضِ مَآ أَمَرَهُۥ ﴿23﴾

    Kalla lamma yaqdi maa amarah.

    Nay, but (man) hath not done what He commanded him.

  24. فَلْيَنظُرِ ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ إِلَىٰ طَعَامِهِۦٓ ﴿24﴾

    Falyanzuril insanu ilaa ta-amih

    Let man consider his food:

  25. أَنَّا صَبَبْنَا ٱلْمَآءَ صَبًّۭا ﴿25﴾

    Anna sabab nalmaa-a sabba.

    How We pour water in showers

  26. ثُمَّ شَقَقْنَا ٱلْأَرْضَ شَقًّۭا ﴿26﴾

    Thumma sha qaqnal-arda shaqqa.

    Then split the earth in clefts

  27. فَأَنۢبَتْنَا فِيهَا حَبًّۭا ﴿27﴾

    Fa ambatna feeha habba

    And cause the grain to grow therein

  28. وَعِنَبًۭا وَقَضْبًۭا ﴿28﴾

    Wa 'inabaw-wa qadba

    And grapes and green fodder

  29. وَزَيْتُونًۭا وَنَخْلًۭا ﴿29﴾

    Wa zaitoonaw wanakh la'

    And olive-trees and palm-trees

  30. وَحَدَآئِقَ غُلْبًۭا ﴿30﴾

    Wa hadaa-iqa ghulba

    And garden-closes of thick foliage

  31. وَفَٰكِهَةًۭ وَأَبًّۭا ﴿31﴾

    Wa faki hataw-wa abba.

    And fruits and grasses:

  32. مَّتَٰعًۭا لَّكُمْ وَلِأَنْعَٰمِكُمْ ﴿32﴾

    Mata'al-lakum wa li-an'amikum.

    Provision for you and your cattle.

  33. فَإِذَا جَآءَتِ ٱلصَّآخَّةُ ﴿33﴾

    Faiza jaa-atis saakhah.

    But when the Shout cometh

  34. يَوْمَ يَفِرُّ ٱلْمَرْءُ مِنْ أَخِيهِ ﴿34﴾

    Yauma yafir-rul mar-u min akheeh

    On the day when a man fleeth from his brother

  35. وَأُمِّهِۦ وَأَبِيهِ ﴿35﴾

    Wa ummihee wa abeeh

    And his mother and his father

  36. وَصَٰحِبَتِهِۦ وَبَنِيهِ ﴿36﴾

    Wa sahi batihee wa baneeh.

    And his wife and his children,

  37. لِكُلِّ ٱمْرِئٍۢ مِّنْهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ شَأْنٌۭ يُغْنِيهِ ﴿37﴾

    Likul limri-im-minuhm yaumaa-izin shaa nuy-yughneeh

    Every man that day will have concern enough to make him heedless (of others).

  38. وُجُوهٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ مُّسْفِرَةٌۭ ﴿38﴾

    Wujoo huny-yauma-izim-musfira;

    On that day faces will be bright as dawn,

  39. ضَاحِكَةٌۭ مُّسْتَبْشِرَةٌۭ ﴿39﴾

    Dahi katum mustab shirah

    Laughing, rejoicing at good news;

  40. وَوُجُوهٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَلَيْهَا غَبَرَةٌۭ ﴿40﴾

    Wa wujoohuy yauma-izin 'alaiha ghabar a

    And other faces, on that day, with dust upon them,

  41. تَرْهَقُهَا قَتَرَةٌ ﴿41﴾

    Tarhaquha qatarah.

    Veiled in darkness,

  42. أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْكَفَرَةُ ٱلْفَجَرَةُ ﴿42﴾

    Ulaa-ika humul-kafa ratul-fajarah.

    Those are the disbelievers, the wicked.
