Surah Al-Lail

Arabic text

  1. بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَىٰ ﴿1﴾

    Wallaili izaa yaghshaa

    By the night enshrouding

  2. وَٱلنَّهَارِ إِذَا تَجَلَّىٰ ﴿2﴾

    Wannahaari izaa tajalla

    And the day resplendent

  3. وَمَا خَلَقَ ٱلذَّكَرَ وَٱلْأُنثَىٰٓ ﴿3﴾

    Wa maa khalaqaz zakara wal unthaa

    And Him Who hath created male and female,

  4. إِنَّ سَعْيَكُمْ لَشَتَّىٰ ﴿4﴾

    Inna sa'yakum lashattaa

    Lo! your effort is dispersed (toward divers ends).

  5. فَأَمَّا مَنْ أَعْطَىٰ وَٱتَّقَىٰ ﴿5﴾

    Fa ammaa man a'taa wattaqaa

    As for him who giveth and is dutiful (toward Allah)

  6. وَصَدَّقَ بِٱلْحُسْنَىٰ ﴿6﴾

    Wa saddaqa bil husnaa

    And believeth in goodness;

  7. فَسَنُيَسِّرُهُۥ لِلْيُسْرَىٰ ﴿7﴾

    Fasanu yassiruhoo lilyusraa

    Surely We will ease his way unto the state of ease.

  8. وَأَمَّا مَنۢ بَخِلَ وَٱسْتَغْنَىٰ ﴿8﴾

    Wa ammaa mam bakhila wastaghnaa

    But as for him who hoardeth and deemeth himself independent,

  9. وَكَذَّبَ بِٱلْحُسْنَىٰ ﴿9﴾

    Wa kazzaba bil husnaa

    And disbelieveth in goodness;

  10. فَسَنُيَسِّرُهُۥ لِلْعُسْرَىٰ ﴿10﴾

    Fasanu yassiruhoo lil'usraa

    Surely We will ease his way unto adversity.

  11. وَمَا يُغْنِى عَنْهُ مَالُهُۥٓ إِذَا تَرَدَّىٰٓ ﴿11﴾

    Wa maa yughnee 'anhu maaluhooo izaa taraddaa

    His riches will not save him when he perisheth.

  12. إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا لَلْهُدَىٰ ﴿12﴾

    Inna 'alainaa lal hudaa

    Lo! Ours it is (to give) the guidance

  13. وَإِنَّ لَنَا لَلْءَاخِرَةَ وَٱلْأُولَىٰ ﴿13﴾

    Wa inna lanaa lal Aakhirata wal oolaa

    And lo! unto Us belong the latter portion and the former.

  14. فَأَنذَرْتُكُمْ نَارًۭا تَلَظَّىٰ ﴿14﴾

    Fa anzartukum naaran talazzaa

    Therefor have I warned you of the flaming Fire

  15. لَا يَصْلَىٰهَآ إِلَّا ٱلْأَشْقَى ﴿15﴾

    Laa yaslaahaaa illal ashqaa

    Which only the most wretched must endure,

  16. ٱلَّذِى كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ ﴿16﴾

    Allazee kazzaba wa tawallaa

    He who denieth and turneth away.

  17. وَسَيُجَنَّبُهَا ٱلْأَتْقَى ﴿17﴾

    Wa sa yujannnabuhal atqaa

    Far removed from it will be the righteous

  18. ٱلَّذِى يُؤْتِى مَالَهُۥ يَتَزَكَّىٰ ﴿18﴾

    Allazee yu'tee maalahoo yatazakkaa

    Who giveth his wealth that he may grow (in goodness).

  19. وَمَا لِأَحَدٍ عِندَهُۥ مِن نِّعْمَةٍۢ تُجْزَىٰٓ ﴿19﴾

    Wa maa li ahadin 'indahoo min ni'matin tujzaaa

    And none hath with him any favour for reward,

  20. إِلَّا ٱبْتِغَآءَ وَجْهِ رَبِّهِ ٱلْأَعْلَىٰ ﴿20﴾

    Illab tighaaa'a wajhi rabbihil a 'laa

    Except as seeking (to fulfil) the purpose of his Lord Most High.

  21. وَلَسَوْفَ يَرْضَىٰ ﴿21﴾

    Wa lasawfa yardaa

    He verily will be content.
